Penny on MARS is an Italian youth - dramedy and an offshoot of the series Alex & Co. of the Disney Channel . The series is being commissioned by The Walt Disney Company Italy in cooperation with Rai Ragazzi and 3Zero2. The series premiered on May 7, 2018 on the Italian Disney Channel.

After Penny was convinced by her best friend Camilla and the singer Alex Leoni from her favorite band Alex & Co. to enroll at the reformed Music Arts Reiner School (MARS for short) for performing arts, Penny passed the entrance exam. The Music Arts Reiner School has very strict rules and is therefore internationally competitive, which means that Penny and her classmates have to overcome new challenges every day. But Penny has a secret that nobody is allowed to find out: She is the daughter of Bakìa, one of the greatest pop stars of the present, who managed to keep her daughter a secret from everyone by deporting Penny to boarding school in Switzerland Penny can have a "normal" childhood and not hinder her mother's career.
Now Penny has grown up and wants to realize her own dream by attending the Music Arts Reiner School together with Camilla and leading a normal life like the other girls in her old age. For this reason, Penny registers at school under a false name in order to put her talent to the test and grow from it without having to deal with her mother's inconvenient success.
The only person at the school who knows Penny's real identity is Camilla. Penny and Camilla are like siblings and nothing and no one can separate them, they thought so until they both fell in love with the same boy at school, the charming Sebastian. In addition, Penny has to face some other challenges that come with growing up.

In April 2017 it was announced that The Walt Disney Company Italy was planning to produce an English-language offshoot series for their series Alex & Co. , which should start filming in autumn 2017. The reason why the series is not produced in Italian but in English is because it allows the series to be better marketed worldwide. The characters Penny, Camilla, Bakìa and Freddy Wolf already had an appearance in the special episodes (in the last episodes) of Alex & Co. to introduce the offshoot series. On June 29, 2017, after the broadcast of the last episodes of Alex & Co. in Italy, the series was officially announced in the form of a teaser, which made the series Penny on MARS known.
The first excerpt from the first season took place on September 20, 2017. The shooting of the first season took place from September 28 to December 15, 2017 in Milan and the surrounding area. The School of Design at the Polytechnic University of Milan in the Bovisa district serves as the backdrop for the Music Arts Reiner School (or MARS for short) .
