The Penseroso Bluff is a striking 1944 m high cliff in the north of the East Antarctic Victoria Land . In the Usarp Mountains it towers 16 km northeast of Mount Nero over the narrow, northern foothills of the Daniels Range .
The northern group of a campaign carried out by the New Zealand Geological Survey Antarctic Expedition from 1963 to 1964 reached the cliff under a cloudy sky, making it gloomy and dreary. As a result, she named it, as an antithesis to the name of the Allegro Valley , 22 km south , after the melancholy poem Il Penseroso ("The Pensive One") by the English poet John Milton from 1645.
