Pentti Holappa

Pentti Vihtori Holappa (born August 11, 1927 in Ylikiiminki , † October 10, 2017 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish writer .

life and career

Holappa was already a classic in Finnish literature during his lifetime. He was editor-in-chief of a newspaper, owner of an antiquarian bookshop and in 1972 became Finnish Minister for Culture and Education. In 1950 he made his debut with the collection of poems Narr im Spiegel . He has written several books of poetry, plays, six novels, diaries, essays and newspaper articles. Holappa is the only Scandinavian poet to be represented with an anthology of poetry, Les mots longues , in the renowned Poésie series at Gallimard, Paris. In 1998 he was elected President of the Académie Européenne de Poésie. He has also made a name for himself as a translator of French literature into Finnish ( Claude Simon , Samuel Beckett , Charles Baudelaire , Pierre Reverdy , Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio ). He lived in France and Finland. In 1998 he won the highest Finnish award for literature, the Finlandia Prize , which is awarded annually by the Finnish Book Foundation.
