Penycloddiau

Penycloddiau ( Welsh : Hill of Ditches ) is a 440  m ASL high mountain in Flintshire , Wales .

Hillfort

Penycloddiau Hillfort, currently under excavation, is the second largest hillfort in Wales. It was made around 500 BC. Built in BC. It surrounds the oval summit of one of the larger hills in the Clwydian Range. Near the summit is a Bronze Age burial mound (built around 2000 BC). Offa's Dyke runs over the hill and through the hill fort .

The hill is surrounded by wide ramparts and ditches. There is only one wall on the steep southern slope. In the north, where the incline is less steep, there are several ramparts and ditches. Previous excavations in the area suggest that hill forts of this size are the older of the two types of Iron Age fortifications in the British Isles . The excavations are intended to clarify the origins of the hill fortifications in western Britain.
