The Ruta 16 ( RN 16 for short ) is a national road in the Región de Tarapacá in the great north of Chile . It is completely asphalted for 46.7 km. It connects the Ruta 5 , Huara and Pozo Almonte in the Oficinas salitreras de Humberstone y Santa Laura sector with Alto Hospicio and Iquique .
An autopista with the name Autopista Rutas del Desierto is currently being built to cope with the heavy traffic. Another project to improve road safety is the construction of a road connection connecting the Cuesta del Toro pass and the Huantajaya avenue in the Alto Hospicio commune . In addition, there are three truck parking spaces and the installation of cameras and additional digital displays.
The official function of this Ruta was ratified in 2000 by Decree Nº 2136 by the Ministerio de Obras Públicas de Chile (MOP).
