Per Hugo Eckerdal (born March 31, 1951 in Östad, Västergötland ) is a Swedish former bishop of the Lutheran Church of Sweden . He was the 23rd Bishop of Gothenburg since 1665 from 2011 to 2018 .

Life

Per Eckerdal, who grew up as a pastor's son in Gothenburg, studied theology and was ordained in 1975 . From 1975 to 1977 he worked as a pastor in Kortedala and from 1977 to 1982 he was adjunct of the Gothenburg diocese. He was pastor in Älvsåker / Tölö from 1982 to 1990. From 1990 to 2008 he then worked as managing director of the Diakonie in Bräcke . In 1992 he became a doctor of theology doctorate , his thesis was about Småkyrka in the big city . Since 2008 he has been chairman of the Diakonie Bräcke. In Bräcke he coordinated the training of deaconesses and deacons as well as the work in health and social care at several locations in Sweden . Eckerdal was also chairman of Famna , the Swedish trade association for non-profit organizations and social affairs, and deputy chairman of the employers 'alliance in the field of non-profit employers' organization.

Eckerdal was elected Bishop of Gothenburg in March 2011 and received episcopal ordination on September 4, 2011. He retired in 2018 and was succeeded by Susanne Rappmann .

Eckerdal is married to Monica Eckerdal, he has four children and two stepchildren and six grandchildren.

His older brother Lars Eckerdal also served as Bishop of Gothenburg from 1991 to 2003.
