particularities |
The Percival Lakes are salt lakes in Western Australia in the Great Sandy Desert , which, when filled, cover an area of 280 km². The closest locations are Parnngurr , Balgo , Jigalong and Marble Bar .
The salt lakes in the south of the desert are located in a former river system and prove the existence of rivers in the past. Outcrops show deposits and evaporite , which are evidence of a drainage system in the desert from the Paleocene . The lakes form small wetlands.
The salt lake area is located in the traditional Martu Aboriginal land . When, in 1964, the salt lakes area was selected as the impact area for the British-Australian medium-range missile Blue Streak , two whites and 20 female Aborigines met. The whites should search the area for people. This was the first time the Aborigines saw whites. This event was featured in the 2009 award-winning Australian documentary Contact .
