Parnngurr

Parnngurr , also written Parnngurr (Cotton Creek) or Parnngurr Community , is a town in Western Australia in Australia , 280 kilometers from Jigalong and 380 kilometers west of Newman . The Aboriginal settlement is located at the end of the Great Sandy Desert a few kilometers southeast of Cotton Creek, a tributary of the Rudall River . The place in East Pilbara Shire is often inaccessible during the rainy season via the unpaved 380-kilometer Talawana Track .

history

In 1986, the Aboriginal settlement was Parnngurr in the newly created Rudall River National Park by the Aborigines of Martu . This settlement is an expression of the Outstation Movement , when numerous indigenous families returned from civilization to the Outback to live there as traditional hunters and gatherers.

In the 1980s and up to the 1990s, the majority of the residents were self-sufficient. Some of the residents go hunting today and look for bush food . They drive up to 50 kilometers into the immediate vicinity in vehicles with all-wheel drive , as there are no more productive areas in the immediate vicinity. The children of the village are instructed by the adults in their traditional culture and in the customs of self-sufficiency. Depending on the situation, there are between 300 and 500 people in the place who belong to the clans of the Manyjilyjarra, Warnman and Kartujarra.

In 2011, 117 people in 25 households lived in the town. There is a shop, a school, clinic, gas station, community building and a landing strip in the village. Some of the residents now work in the mines in the area. Local Aboriginal painting artists create artistic imagery and women create handicrafts for sale in Newman. Travelers en route to Rudall River National Park and the Canning Stock Route visit Parrngurr frequently.

Native title

The Martu have held one of the largest native titles in Australia since 2002 , which extends over an area of 136,000 km, which also includes the Telfer gold mine and other raw material deposits.
