Pereskia bleo is a species of plant in the genus Pereskia from the cactus family(Cactaceae). Spanish common names are "Bleo", "Bleo de Chupa", "Chupa", "Chupa Melón", "Najií", "Najú de Culebra" and "Najú de Esoubas".

description

Pereskia bleo grows as a shrub or small tree and reaches heights of 2 to 8 meters with trunks of up to 15 centimeters in diameter. The olive-green to brownish-gray branches are smooth and occasionally without thorns. The alternate leaves arranged on the branches are clearly stalked up to 3 centimeters long. The leaf blade is elliptical to oblong or lanceolate with a length of 6 to 20 centimeters and a width of 2 to 7 centimeters. The pinnate leaf blades have four to six, often fork-shaped side branches. The thorns are parallel in bundles or are spread out. There are up to five, 5 to 10 millimeter long thorns on the branches. On the main shoots there are up to 40 thorns per areole , which are 2 centimeters long.

The flowers are terminal or appear laterally in inflorescences . The bare, bright red, scarlet, salmon-colored or orange-red flowers reach a diameter of 4 to 6 centimeters. The receptacle is angular and top-shaped.

The more or less spherical fruits are bare or covered with one or two bracts along their upper edge. The fruits, which are yellow when ripe, are edible and have a sour taste.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Pereskia bleo is common in Panama and Colombia along rivers and streams as well as in secondary forests from sea level to altitudes of 1300 meters.

It was first described as Cactus bleo in 1823 by Karl Sigismund Kunth . Augustin-Pyrame de Candolle placed the species in the genus Pereskia in 1828 . Nomenclatory synonyms are Rhodocactus bleo (Kunth) FMKnuth (1939) and Leuenbergeria bleo (Kunth) Lodé (2013).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
