Pereskia portulacifolia is a species of plant in the genus Pereskia from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet portulacifolia means 'the leaves like purslane'. A common Spanish name is "Camelia Roja".

Pereskia portulacifolia grows tree-like or rarely shrubby and reaches heights of 3 to 5 meters. The gray, almost smooth trunk has a diameter of 10 to 20 centimeters. The leaves are variable in size and shape. The obovate to spatulate to heart-shaped leaf blade is 0.5 to 1.5 centimeters long and 0.4 to 1 centimeter wide. The pinnate nerve of the leaf blade shows barely visible lateral nerves. The midrib protrudes from the underside of the leaf. On the branches there are up to three thorns per areole that are 1 to 1.6 centimeters long. Up to 50 thorns are formed on the trunk per areole, which have a length of 1 to 2.2 centimeters.

The flowers are almost always single. They are incompletely unisex, but functionally dioecious . The bright, more or less purple-pink flowers reach a diameter of 3 to 5.5 centimeters. The almost spherical, smooth fruits have a diameter of 1.8 to 3 centimeters. They are roughly leathery when dry.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Pereskia portulacifolia is common on the island of Hispaniola in Haiti and in the Dominican Republic .

It was first described as Cactus portulacifolius in 1753 by Carl von Linné in Species Plantarum . Augustin-Pyrame de Candolle placed the species in the genus Pereskia in 1828 . A synonym is Rhodocactus portulacifolius (L.) FMKnuth .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
