Pergamon2life
Pergamon 2nd Life (“The Second Life of the Pergamon Altar”) is an art project by the author, pantomime and photographer Andrey Alexander ( Moscow ) and the author, circumnavigator and producer Angelika Gebhard from Bad Wiessee . The missing parts of the large frieze of the Pergamon Altar were reproduced in a 30 × 4 meter photo installation .
content
The remains of the 113 m long altar, excavated in 1878 under the direction of Carl Humann on the territory of ancient Pergamon , show numerous empty areas. Andrey Alexander completed the missing parts and figures of the gods and giants of the gigantomachy with his own photographs of contemporary athletes , actors and fragments of ancient sculptures . In a five-year process, these photographs were inserted into the gaps in the marble fragments in terms of color, surface structure and design of the details by means of image processing and drawings. A fictional, artistically inspired reconstruction of the original was created. The project was advised by leading European archaeologists and scientists.
Exhibitions
The photo installation was exhibited to the public for the first time from April 22, 2013 to July 21, 2013 in the Pushkin Museum in Moscow. The exhibition, which was supplemented by a video and audio installation, attracted around 300,000 visitors.
From June 30 to August 2, 2015, the photo installation was exhibited at the Shchusev State Museum of Architecture in Moscow. For the first time, the quadriga from the gigantomachy was shown in a 3D reconstruction.
From October 11, 2017 to February 9, 2018, under the patronage of the Bavarian State Minister for Education and Culture, Science and Art , Dr. Ludwig Spaenle , an exhibition of the photo installation entitled The Two Lives of the Pergamon Altar will take place in the Munich Museum for Casts of Classical Images .
