The subclass Perischoechinoidea mainly comprises primitive and now extinct sea urchins . The exoskeleton consists of many rows of plates, some of which are irregular.
All extant species belong to the order Cidaroida that in the two families cidaridae (Cidaridae) and Psychocidaridae is divided.
Extinct taxa are z. B. Aulechinus and Bothriocidaris from the Ordovician 450 million years ago, the oldest known sea urchins. Archaeocidaris lived from the Carboniferous to the Permian , Plegiocidaris in the Jura and Hemicidaris from the Jura to the Cretaceous .
The subclass Perischoechinoidea is now considered a paraphyletic group and is therefore no longer used in more modern classifications.
