Order : Sorbeoconcha
Subordination : Hypsogastropoda
Superfamily : Cypraeoidea
Family : Cowries (Cypraeidae)
Genre : Perisserosa
Type : Perisserosa guttata
Scientific name
Perisserosa guttata
( Gmelin , 1791)

Perisserosa guttata is the only species of the genus Perisserosa from the family of cowries and has at least two subspecies: on the one hand P. guttata guttata and on the other hand P. guttata surinenis . Some authors and dealers also like to raise P. guttata azumai to the rank of a subspecies. For others is azumai only one Forma of P. guttata guttata .

features

The shell is slightly pear-shaped ( pyriform ) and is average heavy compared to other cowrie snails. The color of the upper side is strong orange and shows white spots, the underside is mostly brown. A special feature of this species are the housing teeth, which clearly and well-defined cover the entire underside and protrude over the side and run out on the back. The difference between guttata guttata and guttata surinensis is on the one hand the outline, guttata surinensis is more oval and smaller than guttata guttata and on the other hand the color of the underside: guttata surinensis is darker and has a more consistent brown color on the side of the outer lip. Furthermore, the points are a guide to distinguish the subspecies from one another: guttata guttata has fewer, but larger points.

Occurrence and distribution

Animals of this species are found in tropical and subtropical waters of the southwest Pacific (in the north to Japan) and the northeastern Ind. They live in crevices of coral reefs at a depth of 25 to 100 m ( surinensis up to 300 m ).

Comparison of the subspecies

There are currently two to three subspecies: P. guttata guttata (JF Gmelin, 1791), P. guttata azumai (or P. guttata guttata f. Azumai (Schilder, 1960)) and P. guttata surinenis (Raybaudi, 1978). The differences are:
