Perla Batalla (* in Los Angeles , California ) is an American singer-songwriter with Mexican roots.
Life
Perla Batalla's father was a Mexican singer and disc jockey, and her parents ran a thriving music business that mainly sold Spanish-language records .
At the beginning of her musician career, Perla Batalla appeared as a background singer with kd lang , the Gipsy Kings , Iggy Pop , Jennifer Warnes and Leonard Cohen, among others . She worked with Cohen from 1988 to 1993 before starting her solo career.
As a solo artist, she benefited from the experience she had as a background singer with the various musical styles. When she started singing rather calm ballads, she soon expanded her music to include aspects of her Latin American roots, which made her style more rhythmic and powerful.
