Personal hoists , patient hoists or lifting aids are aids that are used in the healthcare sector to transfer people who are restricted in their mobility.

General construction

A manually or electrically operated lifting mechanism is accommodated in the appropriate place depending on the type of lifter. Depending on the type of lifter, a cloth seat , a seat or a bed made of rigid material is connected to the lifting device. To carry out the horizontal transfer, the device has a swivel arm, a floor chassis or ceiling-mounted rails . There are also differences depending on the application context with certain other objects (e.g. bathtubs ).

The lift is usually controlled by a manual switch on a flexible spiral cable, sideways movements are made by swiveling by hand. In the case of purely hand-operated devices, the lift takes place via a hydraulic system with hand pump lever actuation or a crank mechanism .

Use, general

Patient lifters are mainly used in hospitals , rehabilitation clinics , inpatient care facilities and in outpatient care as well as at home. Lifters are used to lift a physically handicapped person out of a wheelchair into a piece of seating furniture or on a piece of furniture and vice versa. The transfer of mostly severely restricted people from wheelchair to bed , into the bathtub or to the toilet seat or vice versa takes place depending on the device-specific way. The lifting device is operated by an attendant or, in some cases, by the disabled user himself. When used by nurses, this is done to avoid back injuries and overload.
