The Hessisches Landesarchiv - land register and civil status archive preserves the archival registry office duplicates of the entire state of Hesse and makes them available to the interested public. It is located at the Neustadt (Hessen) location of the Hessian State Archives in Marburg .

History and jurisdiction

In Prussia since 1874 and in the entire German Reich since 1876 , state registrars have registered the births, marriages and deaths of all citizens regardless of their denomination. Until then, baptisms, weddings and funerals were only recorded by the church. Until 2009, only those persons to whom the entries referred, their direct ancestors and descendants and spouses had access to the registry office registers. Other persons had to prove a legal interest (Section 61 of the Civil Status Act as amended on August 8, 1957).

When the amended Personal Status Act came into force on January 1, 2009, the first and second civil status registers, which had been kept by the registry offices and their supervisory authorities at the district administrations and magistrates, became archival records after the expiry of the newly introduced continuation periods. Birth books after 110 years, marriage books after 80 years and death books after 30 years are no longer kept up-to-date through notes and marginal notes, but are finally closed and offered to the archives for takeover. Here they can be viewed by interested users who can show a legitimate interest in accordance with the archiving regulations.

According to Section 6 of the Hessian Implementation Act for the Civil Status Act, the archiving of the first books is the responsibility of the municipalities, while the second books are the responsibility of the state archives. For this purpose, the central civil status archive has been set up within the Hessian State Archives since November 1, 2009.
