The Perth-class was a class of three guided missile destroyers of the Royal Australian Navy . Three units of this modification of the American Charles F. Adams class were built.

history

The first two units of the Perth class were commissioned in early 1962, a third in June 1963. These units were from the Defoe Shipbuilding Company in Bay City , Michigan made. The cost was $ 45 million per unit. The commissioning took place in 1965 and 1966. The three units were the first Australian ships with guided missiles and also the first order for American marine designs. British ships had previously been bought.

The three units were used in the Vietnam War , and another in the Second Gulf War .

In 1993, the American sister ship USS Goldsborough (DDG-20) was acquired by RAN to serve as a spare parts donor, but it was never officially put into service. The three units were decommissioned around the turn of the millennium and were sunk off the coast as diving wrecks. The Goldsborough was canceled in India.

The destroyers were replaced by the ANZAC-class guided missile frigates .

technology

The technical data largely correspond to those of their American counterparts. Only some of the weapons on board were exchanged. The American ASROC missile torpedo system was replaced by a similar system made in Australia. This launch system, called Ikara , has similar performance data, but also required a redesign of the installation site. Two deckhouses had to be installed between the front superstructure and the chimney. The guided missile starter for the RIM-24 Tartar and the Mark-42 multi-purpose guns were retained.
