The USS John King (DDG-3) was a destroyer in the United States Navy . She was a member of the Charles F. Adams class and served 29 years of active service. The ship was used during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. In March 1990 the John King was retired and assigned to the reserve fleet. In 1999 the destroyer was scrapped.
history
The John King was laid down in the Bath Iron Works shipyard on August 25, 1958 and launched on January 30, 1960. The commissioning took place on February 4, 1961 under the command of Commander Albert Monroe Sackett. The ship was named after the soldier John King .
After test drives, the John King made trips to Dublin and the Mediterranean in January 1962 , where it became part of the United States Sixth Fleet . During a stay in Washington, DC in July 1962, the ship was visited by senators, congressmen and the then United States Secretary of the Navy , Fred Korth . In October 1962, the destroyer took part in the naval blockade of Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis. This was followed by joint training missions with the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65) in the Caribbean until December .
In 1963 the John King visited several European ports, including Kiel on June 23rd. In the following years the ship took part in training missions around the world, for example in the summer of 1966 with NATO in the Mediterranean. Further missions with NATO followed in the 1970s and 1980s. One of its few active combat missions saw the John King in 1982 as fire support for US troops off Beirut .
On March 30, 1990, the ship was decommissioned after 29 years of service and assigned to the reserve fleet. On January 12, 1993, it was deleted from the Naval Vessel Register . In February 1999 the John King went to International Shipbreakers in Brownsville (Texas) for scrapping .
