The HMAS Perth (II) was a guided missile destroyer of the same class of the Royal Australian Navy , and the second ship of that name after the HMAS Perth a light cruiser of the Leander class of 1934. Both units were after the Australian city Perth in the State of Western Australia named.
history
The HMAS Perth was based on the American Charles F. Adams-class destroyer on 21 September 1962 the shipyard Defoe Shipbuilding Company in Bay City in the State of Michigan to put Kiel . She was launched on September 26, 1963, Godmother was Lady Beale, the wife of the then Australian Ambassador to the United States . Following its commissioning on July 17, 1965 in Boston , the destroyer stayed off the American coast for eight months to train the crew and test the technology. On February 12, 1966, the ship set out for Australia, where it entered the port of Perth on March 4.
In September 1967 the Perth ran for the first mission off the coast of Vietnam , where it operated as part of the 7th US fleet until April 1968. In September 1969 and September 1970, two more eight-month stays off the Vietnamese coast with the US Navy followed. The Perth came under enemy fire five times and was awarded the United States Navy Unit Commendation and the United States Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation.
In 1974 the destroyer went to the dock for the first major overhaul in Long Beach , where it was equipped with new control electronics and new IT systems. During a second stay in the shipyard in 1979/80, the drive systems were converted from heavy fuel oil to diesel oil .
After the end of the Vietnam War, the Perth operated mostly with American aircraft carrier formations in the Pacific, as well as in the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea. During a major overhaul in 1987, the radar systems and the missile launcher were modernized. In 1991 she visited Egypt and Greece and participated in the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Royal New Zealand Navy . During its last major mission in 1999, the Perth visited Vietnam, the Philippines and Thailand again.
The destroyer was decommissioned on October 15, 1999, and in 2001 it was sunk off the coast of Albany as a diving reef.
Awards
Awards include a Battle Honor for use in the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1971. In addition, eight Battle Honors were taken over from their predecessor ship for participation in the Atlantic Battle from 1939 to 1940, in Malta convoys in 1941 Battle of Cape Matapan , the Balkan campaign in Greece , the Battle of Crete , the Battle of the Mediterranean in 1941, the Pacific War from 1941 to 1942 and the Battle of the Sunda Strait .
