The HMAS Hobart (II) was a guided missile destroyer of the same class of the Royal Australian Navy , and the second ship of that name after the HMAS Hobart a light cruiser of the Leander class of 1934. Both units were after the Australian city Hobart , the capital of Australian state of Tasmania .
history
The Hobart was built at Defoe Shipbuilding Company in Bay City , Michigan . The keel was laid there in 1962. Less than 15 months later, the ship was launched and entered service in late 1965.
The Hobart drove three six-month missions in the Vietnam War. On June 17, 1968, the Hobart was operating together with the USS Boston (CA-69) in Vietnamese waters when the ship was hit by three missiles, but only two of them exploded. It turned out that there was a case of friendly fire : The rockets, AIM-7 Sparrows , were fired from aircraft of the United States Air Force . Two crew members were killed in the attack. For the first tour in the Vietnam War, which took place in 1967, the ship was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation .
On May 12, 2000 the Hobart was decommissioned and sunk on November 5, 2002 as a diving wreck.
