The journeys of Petachja

Petachja from Regensburg (* in Prague 12th century; Petachia von Regensburg , Petachja ben Jacob from Regensburg ) was a Jewish traveler in the Middle Ages .

Before 1187 he set out from Regensburg via Prague , Poland , Kiev , the Crimea (from whose Karaites he brings valuable information), then via Armenia , Mosul and Baghdad a journey to the Persian Susa . The way back took him through Palestine and Greece .

He was particularly interested in Jewish life and the Jewish graves of saints. After his return, several authors, including Jehuda ben Samuel , wrote the travel report Sibbuv (circumnavigation) on the basis of Petachja's notes (but abridged ), which was first printed in Prague in 1595 and had a further 24 editions. The script was translated into several other languages, and a Hebrew-German edition was published in 1905.
