Peter Bürgisser

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peter Bürgisser (* 1962 ) is a mathematician and theoretical computer scientist who deals with algorithmic algebra (computer algebra) and algebraic complexity theory.

Life

Bürgisser received his doctorate in 1990 under Volker Strassen at the University of Konstanz (degenerative order and functional carrier of bilinear images). He was at the University of Zurich , was a professor at the University of Paderborn and has been a professor at the TU Berlin since 2013 .

He deals with efficient algorithms for the solution of algebraic problems and lower bounds in the complexity of algebraic problems, dealt with symbolic and numerical algorithms and the probabilistic analysis of numerical algorithms.

With Felipe Cucker , he contributed to the solution of Smale problem no.17 in 2011 (see there).

He was visiting scholar at the Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing in Berkeley. He was also a visiting researcher in Zurich (University, ETH).

In 2010 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Hyderabad (Smoothed Analysis of Condition Numbers). He was plenary speaker at the Foundations of Computational Mathematics (FoCM) conference in Hong Kong in 2008 and organized workshops on complexity theory at the 2005, 2008 and 2011 workshops and in 2009 and 2012 Oberwolfach workshops. He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society .

He is the editor of Foundations of Computational Mathematics .

further activities

In Bürgisser's youth he appeared as the main actor in four short films by his school friend Roger Steinmann; the broadcast of `Die Türe` on Swiss television DRS on April 10, 1976 was accompanied by an interview between the two of them.
