Felipe Cucker

Juan Felipe Cucker Farkas (* 1958 in Montevideo ) is a Uruguayan mathematician and theoretical computer scientist who deals with the analysis of algorithms ( complexity theory ).

Cucker received his doctorate in 1986 at the same time at the University of Rennes I and the Universidad de Cantabria with Tomás Recio and Michel Coste (Funciones de Nash Sobre Variedades Algebraicas Afine). He is a professor at the City University of Hong Kong and at the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona .

Cucker was a collaborator on Stephen Smale's project to develop a theory of complexity over the real numbers at Berkeley. Together with Peter Bürgisser, he was involved in the solution of one of the Smale problems (No. 17, see there) and he investigated, for example, mathematical models for the collective behavior of animals. He also published a book on art and mathematics and is concerned with learning theory.

He is on the board of the Society for the Foundations of Computational Mathematics (FoCM) and its chairman from 2008 to 2011. He was or is a member of the editorial board of the journals Foundations of Computational Mathematics (Managing Editor), Journal of complexity , SIAM Journal on Optimization and Theoretical Computer Science .

From 2017 to 2019 he is Einstein Visiting Fellow at the Technical University of Berlin with Peter Bürgisser .
