Peter Bachmann (Arabist)
Peter Bachmann (born February 27, 1936 ; † February 21, 2018 ) was a German Arabist.
Life
He studied Classical Philology and Arabic Studies in Göttingen . In 1961 he was a topic on the comedy "The Acharnians" by Aristophanes doctorate . From 1967 to 1970 he was an assistant at the Medical History Institute of the Free University of Berlin for Arabic medicine. In 1971 he submitted his habilitation thesis on an Arabic commentary on the "epidemics" of Hippocrates of Kos . From 1973 to 1978 was director of the Orient Institute in Beirut . From 1979 to 2001 he was Professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Göttingen .
His main research interests were classical and modern Arabic literature, literature of Islamic mysticism and Islamic numismatics.
