Peter Bossman (born November 2, 1955 in Nyive , Ghana ) is a Slovenian politician of Ghanaian origin and mayor of the city of Piran .

life and career

Bossman is the descendant of a Dutch trader from whom the family name comes. His father was a personal friend of Kwame Nkrumah and helped set up Ghanaian embassies abroad. Peter Bossman therefore grew up in various states in North Africa , in Switzerland and Great Britain . He came to Yugoslavia in 1977 to escape the military government in Ghana and studied medicine at the University of Ljubljana on a UN grant . He originally planned to return to Ghana after completing his studies, but then met a Croatian fellow student , whom he married and with whom he has three children. He followed his wife to Piran, where she found a job as a doctor. Bossman himself is a general practitioner. He has been working as a doctor in Koper since the 1980s, but lives in Piran. During the 10 Day War , Bossman volunteered as a doctor. After Slovenia's declaration of independence and his naturalization, he joined the Socialni Demokrati (SD) party , for which he was elected to the Piran City Council in 1998 and chairman of the Lucia District Council in 2002.

In the mayoral elections in Piran 2010 , Bossman ran again for the SD and achieved 30% of the votes in the first ballot, which led to a runoff against the previous conservative incumbent Tomaž Gantar. Bossman won the runoff election with 51.4% of the vote, becoming the first mayor of African descent in Slovenia and the CEECs as a whole. In the subsequent mayoral election, Bossman prevailed in the runoff election on October 19, 2014 with 59.1% against his challenger Sebastjan Jeretič, the candidate of the Slovenija za vedno party .
