Joseph Rampal

Joseph Rampal (born September 12, 1895 in Marseille , † January 12, 1983 in Paris ) was a French flautist , university teacher and father of the flautist Jean-Pierre Rampal .

Joseph Rampal was the son of a goldsmith and music lover. From the age of 12 he took lessons at the Marseiller Conservatoire and from 1913 he studied at the Conservatoire de Paris with Adolphe Hennebains , where he was awarded a Deuxième Prix in 1914. Immediately drafted into military service after the outbreak of World War I and wounded twice, Rampal was only able to continue his studies in Paris with Léopold Lafleurance at the end of 1918 . In 1919 he received a Prix d'Excellence for an outstanding performance in interpretation.

After completing his studies, Rampal returned to Marseille, where he made a name for himself as a solo flutist - also in orchestras in silent film cinemas. In 1925 he received a professorship at the Conservatoire in Marseille and in 1938 became solo flutist of the Marseille Radio Orchestra. His numerous students during his teaching activity, which extended into the 1960s, included his only son Jean-Pierre, for example, Maxence Larrieu and Alain Marion .
