Peter Callanan
Peter Callanan (born June 29, 1935 in Clonakilty , County Cork , † October 11, 2009 in Innishannon , County Cork) was an Irish politician and was a member of the Seanad Éireann , the upper house of the Irish Parliament , from 1997 until his death.
Callanan was a member of Cork County Council from 1979 to 2004 . First elected in 1979, he won each subsequent election. It was only in 2004 that he had to resign from his mandate there, as dual mandates - he had been a member of the Seanad Éireann since 1997 - was no longer possible.
In the 1980s he ran unsuccessfully for the Fianna Fáil for a seat in the Dáil Éireann , the lower house of the Irish Parliament. Instead, he was elected to the 21st Seanad Éireann in 1997. He was re-elected in 2002 and 2007.
Callanan died at his Innishannon home in 2009. He was married and had six children, four sons and two daughters.
