Peter Freitag (artist)

Peter Freitag (* 1972 in Ochsenfurt ) is a contemporary German artist, he lives and works in Berlin.

Life

Peter Freitag studied from 1994 to 2000 at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) with Karl-Heinz Herrfurth , in 1998 at the University of Illinois , Chicago / School of Art and Design (UIC). 1997 to 2000 he received the Cusanuswerk scholarship .

Since then, works have been shown on Friday in numerous exhibitions, especially in Europe (including Vilnius, Vienna, Berlin, Hamburg, Kassel) and North America (including New York, Los Angeles, Toronto, Vancouver).

Friday is a representative of photo-based art. Since 1999, the source material for his work has been found photographic image material from the field of print and digital media.

He deals with the imagery of our time and tries to track down the realities behind it. His conceptual analysis is not about superficial criticism, but about the deconstructivist dialogue with an existing visual language.

Peter Freitag generates his visual worlds primarily from advertising posters, fashion magazines, art catalogs and the Internet. The image information found is reduced to essential elements and figure constellations. Here, collage or Décollage his favorite techniques. Cut or printed photographs or parts of images, mostly advertisements , are partly processed manually and rearranged, photographed or digitally processed after being scanned into the computer. The “found footage ” is used to create image content analyzes that deal primarily with the immanent promise of photography and advertising.

Earlier series - communication examples , Ebays , Private Stages , Scenes For Life - could still be summarized under the term staged photography , but not in the sense of arranged groups of figures or still lifes , but in the form of collage-like assembling of found image materials. Since around 2008 he has been working primarily with direct interventions in paper as the carrier of the found image material. The original information carriers partially disappear completely and the resulting gaps become the main content of the picture.

In recent years, in addition to his collages, paper cuts and paper interventions , he has made public appearances with his series - Examples for Communication , Private Stages - and his self-portraits based on old masters.

From 2012 to 2014 he ran the producer gallery LSD Galerie Berlin together with the artists Anna Lehmann-Brauns , Sabine Dehnel and Viola Kamp .
