Peter Gilbert (composer)

Peter Gilbert (born December 23, 1975 in Louisville / Kentucky ) is an American composer and music teacher.

Gilbert studied at the Cleveland Institute of Music with Margaret Brouwer , at Illinois Wesleyan University with David Vayo , at the Paris Schola Cantorum with Samuel Adler , Philip Lasser and Narcis Bonet, and at Harvard University with Bernard Rands , Mario Davidovsky , and Joshua Fineberg . Other teachers were Julian Anderson , Lee Hyla , Hans Tutschku and Helmut Lachenmann .

He has taught music theory and composition at Wellesley College , Harvard University, Case Western Reserve University, the Cleveland Institute of Music , whose Young Composers Program he directed, Northeastern University and the University of Massachusetts- Dartmouth. He also worked at the Center National de Création Musicale in Bourges, was a scholarship holder of the Akademie Schloss Solitude and composer in residence at the Newburyport Chamber Music Festival .

His compositions have been performed by ensembles such as the Indianapolis Brass Ensemble of the Cleveland Chamber Symphony , the Cleveland Institute of Music Orchestra , the Illinois Wesleyan University Wind Ensemble , the Butler University Wind Ensemble , the Case Western Reserve University Symphonic Winds, and the Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville and the University Circle Wind Ensemble and performed by soloists such as flautist Mario Caroli, recorder player Jeremias Schwarzer , clarinetist Michael Norsworthy , saxophonist Philipp Stäudlin and guitarists White Rabbit and Daniel Lippel . He composed the music for the documentary Songs of the Tundra for the filmmaker Alexander Berman .

In 2010 Gilbert was composer in residence with his partner Karola Obermüller at the Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe. They worked together on the experimental chamber opera 3 × 3 = , after which he worked on an opera for the 200th birthday of Robert Schumann .
