Peter Gnehm
Peter Gnehm (* 1712 in Stein am Rhein ; † March 21, 1799 in Bern ) was a Swiss faience - tiled stove painter. He also worked as a landscape painter.
Life
The Bernese Burgerkammer (settlement authority) expelled Gnehm from the city in 1744 for illegitimate residence in Bern. In 1754 he received a tolerance certificate and worked from then on in Bern until his death. In the entire area of the former city and republic of Bern there are numerous tiled stoves painted by him, most of them are in blue on a white background, a few in sepia (manganese violet) or polychrome. Gnehm's life's work has not been comprehensively processed to this day, so that neither the extent of his work that has been preserved nor its variance is known. His late work from the 1780s onwards in particular is poorly documented. Gnehm's work clearly had an influence on other tiled stove manufacturers and stove painters in the canton of Bern, such as B. the Hafner von Bäriswil. Peter Gnehm worked primarily for the Bernese master potter Wilhelm Emanuel Dittlinger . However, there is also archival evidence of work e.g. B. for Hafner Häberli from Hängelen (municipality of Krauchthal). He signed and dated his tiles differently with PG or P. Gnehm .
