Peter Graham (* 1958 in Lanarkshire , Scotland ) is a British composer.

Life

Peter Graham received brass and piano lessons from his parents. Until 1980 he studied first at the University of Edinburgh , among others with Edward Gregson . He then moved to Goldsmiths' College in London , where he continued his studies with Gregson and finally graduated with a PhD in composition .

Graham lived in New York City from 1983 to 1986 and worked as a freelance composer for the "SA Music Bureau". Since returning to the UK , he has worked regularly for the BBC television and radio station . In addition, he has specialized in arrangements and compositions for brass band ; he is one of the leading contemporary composers in this field. His works are performed worldwide and are often used as competitive pieces at national championships. In 1999 the album Reflected in Brass , which Evelyn Glennie recorded with the Black Dyke Band and on which Graham worked as arranger, was nominated for a Grammy for best classic crossover album. Graham is also active as a wind band composer; In 2002 he won the Sousa / ABA / Ostwald Award of the American Bandmasters Association for his piece Harrison's Dream .

In 1994, Graham and his wife founded the music publishing company Gramercy Music , which specializes in the publication of music for brass bands, wind orchestras and vocals. He is also professor of composition at the University of Salford and was the first civilian composer in residence with the band of the Coldstream Guards .

Peter Graham currently lives with his wife, Janey, his son Ryan and his daughter Megan in Cheshire ( England ).
