Peter Head

Peter Head (born February 27, 1947 in Birmingham ) is a British civil engineer.

Peter Head studied at Imperial College London and was with Freeman, Fox and Partners from 1969, for whom he designed the Avonmouth, Friarton and Myton bridges and supervised their construction. From 1980 he was in the Maunsell Group, whose Chief Executive Officer he became in 2001. There he pioneered the use of composite materials in bridges (first implemented in a bridge in Aberfeldy).

From 2004 he was with Arup , where he directs the urban development group worldwide and made a name for himself in sustainable urban development. One project was the Dongtan Eco-City Project in China. For sustainable urban development, he founded the Ecological Sequestration Trust. In 2002 he was appointed a member of the London Sustainable Development Commission by the Mayor of London. In 2011 he was awarded the CBE for his achievements in this area . He was also involved in planning the London 2012 Olympics.

He received an OBE for the second Severn Bridge .

In 1998 he received the International Award of Merit in Structural Engineering and he received the silver medal of the Royal Academy of Engineering and in 2008 the Sir Frank Whittle Medal. In 2008 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Bristol and is visiting professor there.
