reconciliation

Central to Raveling's work is the question of whether and how reconciliation with the Germans is possible after the Holocaust: In 1980, Wiard Raveling wrote a letter to the moral philosopher Vladimir Jankélévitch, who was of Jewish descent, in response to his statement against the statute of limitations on collaboration crimes and Jankélévitch's attitude forgiving. This led to an exchange of letters and ultimately a personal exchange in Paris at Jankélévitch. This correspondence was also used by Jacques Derrida to discuss forgiveness. In “Après tout”, Fabien Lévy turned it into a vocal and instrumental ensemble that was performed at the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the Elysée Treaty .

Ostfriesenwitz

Wiard Raveling, himself an East Frisian , as a teacher at the grammar school in Westerstede in Ammerland, witnessed how the East Frisian joke was created by the school newspaper “Der Trompeter” and wrote the frequently referenced work “The History of East Frisian Jokes”.
