Peter Infeld (born Peter Goretschan ; born May 8, 1942 in Vienna ; † April 15, 2009 ibid) was an Austrian musician, string producer and art collector and patron.

biography

Infeld's biological father died in Stalingrad . Years later, his mother Margaretha (1904–1994) married the mechanical engineer Otto Infeld, who developed steel strings for string instruments with the violin maker Franz Thomastik and who adopted his wife's son.

Infeld graduated from high school in Vienna in 1960 and was trained as a tenor at a young age . After the death of his stepfather in 1965, his mother Margaretha Infeld took over the string company. At the end of the 1960s he and his mother began collecting pictures, including art from Gugging and Naive art from Croatia. Infeld had amassed an art collection with over 12,000 works and converted the hunting lodge of Halbturn Castle into an exhibition hall.

After his mother's death in 1994, Infeld became the sole managing director of Thomastik-Infeld GmbH.

The Company

In 1919 the violin maker Franz Thomastik and the civil engineer Otto Infeld decided to found a company to manufacture steel strings for musical instruments . From now on, the conventional gut string was replaced by the new type of string. The Thomastik-Infeld company offered several of these strings, which made the brand very popular with musicians all over the world in a short time. Margaretha Infeld managed the company from 1965 to 1994. After her death, the company was continued by her son Peter Infeld. He was 67 years old. The company has been managed by his widow Zdenka Infeld since 2009 . In September 2012, the memorial plaque (see above!) Was unveiled by Zdenka Infeld and the district head of Margareten Kurt Wimmer at Diehlgasse 27, the headquarters of Thomastik-Infeld GmbH.

The company still makes Dominant strings, one of the earliest brands of Perlon strings that are now considered the standard for other synthetic string sets. Other string brands of the company are for example: Superflexibel, Belcanto, Vision, Infeld (red and blue), Spirocore Prazision, Alphayue, Peter Infeld . The Thomastik-Infeld company with over 200 employees produces 4.2 million strings every year. Sales (2016) were $ 17 million.
