Peter Joseph von Monschaw
Peter Joseph von Monschaw (born September 13, 1768 in Cologne ; † 1840 ) was a Prussian district administrator.
Life
Origin and family
Peter Joseph von Monschaw came from a wealthy and respected family of officials. The male family members were allowed to call themselves "Imperial Knights and Edler von Monschaw" after the patent of Emperor Franz I from 1756. He was married to Maria Anna Pauli. The marriage resulted in two sons and three daughters, two of whom emigrated to the United States. The son Karl became a Prussian notary and judiciary.
Professional background
After graduating from high school in Cologne , Peter Joseph studied law at the University of Cologne and obtained his master's degree . In 1792 he became a councilor and four years later he was a member of the municipality of Cologne . He stayed here until he moved to the Lower Rhine in 1811. He became Maire von Oedt here . On May 1, 1816, initially appointed provisional district administrator for the Kempen district , he was finally appointed district administrator in 1817. The district administrator was authorized to issue instructions to the local authorities of the cities belonging to the district and the flat country. He was also entitled to impose sentences of two days in prison or a fine of five talers.
In 1837, at the age of almost 70, he retired from service for health reasons.
