Athletic career

As a 19-year-old, Peter Kubern appeared for the first time in the second-rate GDR league when he played four point games for the company sports community (BSG) Motor Dessau . A year later he was already a regular at BSG Motor with 26 appearances and seven goals in 30 point games. For the 1966/67 season he moved to the upper division Hallescher FC Chemie, the regional football focus. There he played mainly with the 2nd team in the fourth class district class. Only on the 7th league match day he came to a use in the top division. In the match between HFC and Motor Zwickau (0: 4) he replaced the striker Bernd Donau who was not ready for actionmobilized. Between 1967 and 1968 Kubern had to do his military service, but was able to continue playing football in the district class of SG Dynamo Halle-Süd. He then moved to BSG Chemie Wolfen . After he had only played two point games with the GDR league team in 1969/1970, he developed into a regular again in the 1970/71 season in 26 point games with 23 inserts and four goals. At the end of the season, BSG Chemie was downgraded to the third-class district league due to a violation of the association's statutes. With the help of Kubern succeeded in the immediate return to the GDR league, in which it completed its most successful season in 1972/73. He was used in all 22 league games and was Wolfener's top scorer with thirteen goals. In 1974 Wolfen was relegated to the district league again and stayed there until 1977. Again Kubern helped the team to return to the GDR league in 1977, where he remained active for another four seasons. In the 88 point games played during this time, he played 79 games and remained a successful striker with 21 goals. In 1981 Chemie Wolfen had to relegate again. For the 36-year-old Kubern, this was the farewell to higher-class football as an active player. There he had been present in eleven seasons and, in addition to his one league assignment, had played 176 GDR league games in which he scored 51 goals.
