Peter Stewart Lane, Baron Lane of Horsell FCAS (born January 29, 1925 - January 9, 2009 ) was a British politician ( Conservative Party ) and businessman.

life and career

Lane attended school in Sherborne, England . As a lieutenant in the Royal Navy , he served on the destroyers HMS Ripley , HMS Viceroy and HMS Saumarez in the North Atlantic.

After the war, he returned to civilian life and resigned as auditor in the tax office of his father, Lane Scotten , one that later with Binder Hamlyn merged. There he was promoted to senior partner and stayed there from 1979 to 1992.

He has served as an auditor on numerous executive boards. He chaired Webster's Publications for more than a decade . He has chaired Opperman Holdings , KMPH Advertising , Rippers , British Electronic Controls , Brent International , Elswick and Automated Security and Attwoods , the latter of which succeeded Sir Denis Thatcher .

Lane was elected vice chairman of the Conservative Party's National Union in 1981 . He was chairman of the National Union from 1986 to 1991. His chairmanship began with fears that the 7,000-member Anglo-Asian Conservative Society was being infiltrated by militant Sikh separatists. Lane proposed a "One Nation Forum" which should include all ethnic groups. In 1983 he chaired the party conference at the memorable session at which Cecil Parkinson resigned.

In 1984 he was beaten to the Knight Bachelor . On July 17, 1990, he was named a Life Peer as Baron Lane of Horsell , of Woking in the County of Surrey .

He later also served as chairman of Action for Addiction from 1991 to 1994 and Nuffield Hospital from 1993 to 1996, and served as director in several roles.

Lane died on January 9, 2009 at the age of 83.

family

Lane married Doris Botsford in 1951, who died in 1969. His two daughters survived him. The elder, Rosalie, is married to Lord Trefgarne.
