Peter Levene, Baron Levene of Portsoken

Peter Keith Levene, Baron Levene of Portsoken KBE (born December 8, 1941 ) is a director of Starr Underwriting Agents Limited and a former Lord Mayor of London .

Life

Lord Levene has had a long and varied career in business, banking, and politics.

He went to the City of London School and studied at the University of Manchester , where he graduated in economics and political science. He joined United Scientific Holdings in 1963 , a small company that grew to become a major supplier to the British and foreign armies. There he rose to the position of the executive committee in 1981.

He worked at Morgan Stanley and Wasserstein Perella . In the next few years he was a board member of Bankers Trust International and then vice chairman of Deutsche Bank . From 2002 to 2011 he was a board member of Lloyd’s .

He became a personal advisor to Defense Minister Michael Heseltine and then permanent sectarian to the head of the procurement department. He then worked in a number of other government posts. He was u. a. Adviser to the Minister for the Environment, the President of the Chamber of Commerce and the Chancellor of the Exchequer . During that time he was also on the board of directors of Docklands Light Railway and then board member and CEO of Canary Wharf Ltd. He was also on the management board of J. Sainsbury plc and Total .

From 1994 to 2012 he was Alderman ( Alderman ) of the City of London and in 1995/96 Sheriff of London . From 1989 to 1999 he was Lord Mayor of London . He promoted and supported the growth of London as a financial center during this time. In 1989 he was ennobled as Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire and in 1997 he was promoted to Life Peer as Baron Levene of Portsoken , of Portsoken in the City of London .

Lord Levene sits on four boards of directors at General Dynamics UK Limited , Haymarket Group Ltd , Eurotunnel sa and China Construction Bank . In the House of Lord he is a member of the Economic Committee. In July 2010, the Defense Minister appointed him head of the Army Reform Committee, which was supposed to develop proposals for the restructuring of the Defense Ministry. The committee's report was presented in June 2011 and is currently being implemented.

He speaks German, French and Italian.

From his 1966 marriage to Wendy Ann Fraiman, he has three children.
