Peter Mädler

Peter Mädler (born July 10, 1943 , † April 26, 1963 in Berlin ) was a victim of the Berlin Wall .

Mädler was adopted, lived in Hoyerswerda and learned the profession of electrician from 1958 to 1961 at the company vocational school of the Lauta power plant . He then worked as an electrician at the Lübbenau power station until the beginning of 1961 .

In the early morning of April 26, 1963, Mädler tried to flee from the GDR to West Berlin by swimming through the Teltow Canal and was shot at by GDR border guards. Mädler went into hiding unharmed, but was fatally wounded when he reappeared just outside the border. Madler sank in the canal and his body was recovered that afternoon. His urn grave was in the forest cemetery in Hoyerswerda . The Potsdam Regional Court sentenced the two border guards, who were awarded the medal for exemplary border service after the act , to prison sentences of 18 months on probation in 1995.
