Peter Michael Ehrle

Peter Michael Ehrle (born March 23, 1945 in Chodau , Sudetenland ) is a German librarian and historian . From 1994 to 2008 he was director of the Badische Landesbibliothek in Karlsruhe.

Life

Ehrle studied history and German in Tübingen. In 1979 he received his doctorate with the work People's Representation in Vormärz: Studies on the Composition, Election and Function of the German State Parliaments in the Field of Tension Between Monarchical Principle and Corporate Representation . He completed the library traineeship at the University Library of Tübingen , where he then took over the subject librarianship for history and headed the subject catalog from 1974 to 1992. From 1992 to 1994 he acted as the deputy director of the Württemberg State Library in Stuttgart, and in 1994 he became director of the Baden State Library in Karlsruhe.

Ehrle's tenure was marked by an enormous increase in manuscripts and old prints at the Baden State Library, including a. In 1994 268 medieval manuscripts and 52 incunabula from the Fürstlich Fürstenbergische Hofbibliothek Donaueschingen , 1995 the castle library Baden-Baden with around 40,000 volumes and its musical collection and 1999 a collection of music manuscripts and prints, also from the Fürstenbergische Hofbibliothek Donaueschingen. The most significant increase took place in 2001 with the handwriting C of the Nibelungenlied .

In 2006, the then government of Baden-Württemberg and the von Baden family planned in the so-called manuscript dispute to sell medieval manuscripts from the holdings of the Badische Landesbibliothek and to use the proceeds to finance the renovation of Salem Castle on Lake Constance. Ehrle campaigned vehemently and ultimately successfully against the sale of the manuscripts and was an advisory member of the expert commission set up in 2007 to clarify the question of ownership.

When the state of Baden-Württemberg intended, based on a proposal by the state audit office, to cut a large number of jobs in the Baden state library, Ehrle submitted his application for early retirement in 2008.
