Peter Ryom

Peter Ryom (born May 31, 1937 in Copenhagen ) is a Danish musicologist . He became internationally known as the author of the Ryom directory of Antonio Vivaldi's works named after him .

Life

Ryom spent the first years of his life in Paris , where his father ran a cement factory. When he was 12 years old, the family returned to Denmark.

Ryom studied musicology and French at the University of Copenhagen (graduating in 1967) and then worked on the “small edition” of his Vivaldi catalog raisonné as a state scholarship holder. In 1977 he received his doctorate in Copenhagen on Les manuscrits de Vivaldi ; In 1978 he became a member of the scientific committee of the Istituto Italiano Antonio Vivaldi , which publishes Vivaldi's works in a critical new edition. From 1981 to 2002 he worked as program director and speaker for the classical program of Danmarks Radio . From 1992 he was the music editor at Store Danske Encyklopædi (published 1994–2002).

Ryom's second research focus alongside Vivaldi's music is (Catholic) church music . In 1958 he converted from Protestantism to Catholicism ; from 1990 to 1999 he was a member of the Pastoral Council of the Roman Catholic Church in Denmark .
