Ryom Directory

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ryom directory (abbreviation RV ) is a directory of the works of the composer Antonio Vivaldi . It was published in 1973 by the Danish musicologist Peter Ryom and was able to prevail over other directories in the professional world.

Principles

In Ryom's work, the basis for classifying Antonio Vivaldi's works does not lie in the chronology of their creation, but in the genre , the scoring and the key . The order of the first 585 instrumental works is based on three hierarchical levels, identified by letters and numbers.

It starts with a main categorization (capital letters) according to the occupation:

  • A - sonatas for one instrument
  • B - sonatas for two instruments
  • C - sonatas for more than two instruments
  • D - orchestral works (without soloists )
  • E - orchestral works, a soloist
  • F - orchestral work, two soloists
  • G - orchestral work, more than two soloists
  • H - works for two orchestras (one or more soloists)

Then a classification is made according to solo instruments (lower case letters):

The key is used as the third classification feature. Numbers are assigned starting with C major ( 1 ), followed by C minor ( 2 ) via C sharp major ( 3 ) to B minor ( 24 ).

The sonata for (one) violin in C major is therefore given the notation Aa1 and has the directory number 1 (Violin Sonata in C major RV 1; op. 2 No. 6; Fanna XIII / 34). The Concerto in due cori for double string orchestra, 4 flutes and 4 violins in A major is given the notation Ho19 and closes the list of instrumental works with directory number RV 585.

The vocal pieces (RV 586 to RV 740) are divided into sacred and (more) secular works.

Originally the Ryom directory extended to RV 740. New discoveries and new identifications increased the number of works attributed to Vivaldi in the years after the first publication. These plants receive the numbers from RV 741 and no longer follow the criteria described above.

The recording and cataloging of Antonio Vivaldi's works has not been fully completed to this day, as the authorship is often not secured or is difficult to verify. The catalog raisonné must therefore be revised and changed over and over again.
