Peter Schüller

Peter Schüller (born May 21, 1921 in Mechernich ; † May 18, 2006 ibid) was a German local politician ( SPD ) and from 1989 to 1994 mayor of his hometown Mechernich. His son Jakob Schüller has been the head of the adult education center in Cologne since March 2013 .

Life

After attending primary school, Peter Schüller completed an apprenticeship as a miner at the Mechernicher Werke trade union from 1935 to 1939 . In between 1939 and 1945, followed by military service , he fell in World War II in captivity . From 1948 to 1959 he worked in the forestry profession. Between 1959 and 1974 he worked as an administrative employee in the Bundeswehr . From 1962 to 1976 he was Chairman of the General Staff Council of the Bundeswehr in Mechernich. In 1975 he was elected chairman of the district staff council in the Wahn Air Force Support Command. He had to give up this post in 1976 because of a heart attack.

Political party

From 1973 to 1984 Peter Schüller was chairman of the local association of the Mechernich SPD and for many years also a member of the sub-district executive committee of the SPD in the Euskirchen district.

politics

In 1969, Schüller joined the SPD because of dissatisfaction with the CDU's policy and because of the “optimism that carried the wind of change through the country at that time”. Schüller's great political role model was Willy Brandt , whom he met personally in 1974. In 1969 he moved to the city council of Mechernich for the first time. Since then, voters have given him a mandate in the local parliament in uninterrupted fashion . In 1972 he became the parliamentary leader of his party in the city ​​council . From 1974 to 1994 he was the only SPD politician who was directly elected to the district council by voters. Due to his social commitment, Schüller was known as an “advocate for the common people”.

On October 17, 1989, Schüller had achieved his major political goal and was elected Mechernich's first social democratic mayor. In that year he was also elected deputy district administrator for the Euskirchen district. Under his leadership, the number of members of the SPD rose continuously to 380. 16 Social Democrats were part of the Mechernich City Council under his leadership. In 1994 he gave up the mayor's office for health reasons.

Honors

On May 21, 1987, Peter Schüller was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon in recognition of his many years of service in the area of ​​local politics. He was honorary mayor of his hometown Mechernich. A street in the residential area of ​​Mechernich-Nord was named in his honor on June 22, 2012. The "Peter-Schüller-Weg" is located in the new development area "Auf der Kirchheide"; the name goes back to a corresponding council decision of September 21, 2010.
