Life

Herding children in Upper Swabia (Photo by Peter Scherer, probably around 1900)

Peter Scherer was born in the Moselle community of Gondorf as one of the four children of the teacher Sebastian Scherer and his wife Margarethe born. Born in Münch. After completing his photography training and military service in nearby Koblenz , he went to Ravensburg in 1891. There he first worked for the photographer Karl Weiss, whose studio he took over in 1893. In order to avoid the great pressure of competition in the field of photography in Ravensburg, Scherer founded a photography business in Koblenz in 1898, but returned to Ravensburg two years later. It was there that the photographer, who was also very skilled in the laboratory, developed his special artistic ambitions, which primarily consisted of masterfully depicting people in their environment and their ancestral surroundings. His work has received numerous awards at exhibitions. Scherer's recordings of Vorarlberg herding children in particular have become known nationwide . Scherer had been married to Emilie, the daughter of the painter Julius Weiss and sister of his former employer Karl Weiss, with whom he had five children, since 1893.
