Peter Schmitter

Peter Schmitter (1998)

Peter Schmitter (born May 25, 1943 in Cologne ; † June 12, 2006 in Seoul ) was a German linguist and professor at the University of Münster and in Seoul.

Schmitter studied ancient languages, linguistics and philosophy in Bonn and Munich. In 1970 he received his doctorate in Munich, followed by his habilitation in 1980 with Helmut Gipper in Münster. In 1986 he was appointed professor for general linguistics and philosophy of language in Münster. From 1997 he also held a professorship in Seoul at the Hankuk University for foreign languages . There he died unexpectedly in 2006.

Schmitter dealt primarily with the history of linguistics. He headed the study group History of Linguistics in Münster and was co-editor of the journal Contributions to the History of Linguistics . The seven-volume “History of Language Theory ”, which he initiated and edited, is widely regarded as a standard work.
