Peter Schreiner (theologian)

Peter Schreiner (* 1955 in Bad Bergzabern ) is a German educational scientist.

After studying educational science, Protestant theology and sociology at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, from 1980 onwards he worked as a consultant for development policy for the Association of Protestant Youth . Since 1991 he has been working at the Comenius Institute , the Evangelical Work Center for Educational Science in Münster , which is supported by the EKD . There he was a research assistant and later deputy director until the end of September 2015. On September 18, 2015, he was appointed director of the institute to succeed Pastor Volker Elsenbast . His work focuses on Protestant educational responsibility in Europe, comparative religious education, intercultural, interreligious learning and ecumenical learning . Due to a dissertation on religion in the context of a Europeanization of education , which was submitted at the same time to the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and the Free University of Amsterdam , he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD.

From 2003 to 2020 he was President of the InterEuropean Commission on Church and School (ICCS). He was also the moderator of the Coordination Group for Religion and Education in Europe (CoGREE) until 2020. From 1998 to 2006 he was a member of the Commission on Education and Ecumenical Formation of the World Council of Churches . At the Council of Europe he works as an expert in the field of intercultural education. With Norbert Mette and others he edited a selection of works by Paulo Freire .
