Friedrich Schweitzer

Friedrich Schweitzer (* 1954 ) is a German Protestant theologian and religious educator .

Life

Friedrich Schweitzer studied Protestant theology and pedagogy in Tübingen until 1979 and in 1980 he obtained a Master of Theology from Harvard University . In 1983 he was in Tübingen with the social science dissertation Identity and Education. What can the concept of identity do for education? did his doctorate and habilitation in 1992 in Protestant theology with the thesis The Religion of the Child. On the history of the problem of a fundamental question in religious education . In 1992 he was appointed to the chair for practical theology / religious education at the University of Mainz . Since 1995 he has held the chair for practical theology / religious education at the University of Tübingen . Schweitzer has held guest lectureships and lectureships in Princeton , Budapest , Riga , Thessaloniki and Vienna . Many of his works have been published in Danish, English, Japanese, Dutch, Korean or Hungarian.

Until 2014, Schweitzer was chairman of the Chamber of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) for education and upbringing, children and youth and heads the Evangelical Institute for Vocational Religious Education (EIBOR), which includes a team from the departments of theology, psychology, pedagogy and educational sciences engaged in researching, developing and supporting religious education at vocational schools .

Awards

On June 9, 2017, Friedrich Schweitzer was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Helsinki in Finland .
