Peter Silberberg

Peter Silberberg (* December 1687 in Hof Heister near Düssel ; † May 1757 in Elberfeld (now part of Wuppertal )) was the mayor of Elberfeld.

Life

Silberberg was born the son of his father, who was also called Peter Silberberg. He was born on the Silberberg farm near Wülfrath and married Margareta Lang (1658 to approx. 1720) from Düssel. She had inherited the Heister farm near Düssel from her father, where her son Peter was born in December 1687. He was baptized on December 27th in nearby Düssel. He later worked as a wine merchant in Elberfeld and in 1717 married Anna Margareta Hohdahl (1692–1777) from Wülfrath. He had nine children with her, only four of whom survived toddlerhood. Among them was Johann Peter Silberberg (1726–1797), who was also mayor of Elberfeld in 1769 and 1778.

Peter Silberberg himself first became a commoner of the city in 1738 and a member of the council the following year. When he was elected mayor in 1741, he stood with three candidates, each from families who had already made numerous mayors. Nevertheless, Silberberg was able to assert himself as a newcomer, whose wife was also not related to anyone from the long-established families, which was unusual and had not yet happened in Elberfeld in the 18th century. In 1742 Silberberg was appointed city judge of Elberfeld and the following year again a council member. He died in Elberfeld in May 1757 and was buried on May 10th.
