Peter de Weerth (born September 18, 1694 in Elberfeld (today a district of Wuppertal ); † March 9, 1763 ibid) was Mayor of Elberfeld.

Life

De Weerth was born the son of Werner de Weerth (1653-1738), the mayor of Elberfeld in 1705 and 1714, and his wife Ursula Kirberg (1670-1735). He himself married Anna Christina Wichelhausen (1709–1751) from Bremen, daughter of the merchant Engelbert Wichelhausen (1679–1761), who was born in Barmen and moved to Bremen at a young age, and who was elected as a senior citizen in Bremen and later as councilor. Peter de Weerth and Anna Christina Wichelhausen married on May 20, 1727 in Bremen and then moved to Elberfeld, where de Weerth worked as a businessman. From this marriage there were nine children, but only four of them survived toddlerhood. Among them were Anna Maria de Weerth (1735–1781), who married her cousin Reinhard Noot , also mayor of Elberfeld, in 1763 , and Werner de Weerth , who was even three times mayor of Elberfeld.

Thanks to the popularity of his father, who had become mayor of Elberfeld twice, he was able to make a political career in Elberfeld even without being closely related. He became common man in 1734 after having been a councilor of the city from 1729 to 1733. In 1735 he was proposed for the first time as mayor, but could not prevail against Johannes Lohe . Instead he became a council member again, which he was from 1735 to 1738, from 1740 to 1741, 1744, from 1746 to 1748, 1750 to 1753, 1755, 1756 and 1758 as well. In the mayoral election in 1742 he was finally elected to office and thus became city judge of Elberfeld a year later . After 1758 he retired and finally died on March 9, 1763 in his hometown, the funeral took place five days later. His two great-grandfathers on his mother's side, Johann (es) Kirberg and Wilhelm Teschemacher, were also mayors of Elberfeld.
