Peter Spufford

Peter Spufford (born August 18, 1934 - † November 19, 2017 ) was a British economic historian with a focus on Middle Ages Europe. He was most recently Emeritus at Cambridge University .

Life

Peter Spufford wrote several basic works on the question of the use and nature of coinage and pure accounting money in the Middle Ages of Europe, but also on questions of the merchant mentality and organization. His work Power and Profit alone had been translated into four languages ​​by 2017; he himself spoke French almost without an accent.

Spufford was married to Margaret Spufford , also a historian , from 1962 to 2014 . The couple had a son named Francis (* 1964) and a daughter named Bridget (* 1967), who died in 1989. The Bridget's Hostel for disabled students in Cambridge was named after her.

Peter Spufford was Research Fellow at Jesus College and President of the Cambridge University Heraldic and Genealogical Society, founded in 1948, in the academic year 1959–1960, of which he was vice-president from then on.

In 1968 Spufford became a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society , in 1979 at the Queen's College in Cambridge, in 1990 he became a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries , as well as of the British Academy in 1994 . In 2005 he received the Medal of the Royal Numismatic Society .

Spufford worked as a reader for economic history from 1990 to 2001 , and in 2000/2001 he took over the chair for European history, which he held until his retirement. 2017 was published in his honor, edited by Martin Allen and Nicholas Mayhew: Money and its use in Medieval Europe.
